Modernizing the Grid in Micro Steps
By Aron Bowman, President, ELM MicroGrid
Over the last few years, we’ve all read stories about massive battery energy storage systems (BESS) being deployed for grid support, resulting in hundreds of megawatt hours installed in massive field deployments supporting generation and transmission sites. These systems have become critical to the viability of the utility grid as our journey towards electrification continues, although their scope of use is limited. There is however a less heralded adoption of energy storage in the form of distributed microgrid capable BESS systems that are growing with utilities, from the largest majors to some of the smallest co-ops.
