Summary

The MLK Community Center in Spokane, Washington is developing a resilient, community-focused microgrid designed to provide clean energy and essential backup power during grid outages and extreme weather events. ELM MicroGrid engineered and manufactured the system in partnership with Avista Utilities, delivering a fully integrated solution that enhances reliability and supports the Center’s role as a critical resource for the neighborhood. The microgrid includes a solar PV array that provides renewable power for daily operations and charges the battery system, along with a robust battery energy storage solution that enables the Center to maintain food bank refrigeration, kitchen operations, lighting, heating and cooling, showers, and device charging during emergencies. A grid interface switch allows the facility to safely disconnect from Avista’s grid and operate independently, while the ELM FieldSight MicroGrid Controller manages all modes and provides real-time system control and monitoring. The system also includes EV charging capability, allowing two electric police vehicles stationed at the Center to remain operational during outages. Together, these technologies strengthen community resilience, reduce strain on the utility grid, and demonstrate the impact of modern microgrid solutions in supporting essential services.
