Summary

Southwest Wisconsin Technical College partnered with Ameresco, a leading cleantech integrator, to implement a campus-wide solar-plus-storage solution that delivers both financial and environmental benefits. As part of this collaborative effort, ELM MicroGrid provided the battery energy storage system (BESS) and advanced microgrid controls that help maximize the impact of the campus’s new solar array.

Commissioned in 2025, this forward-thinking project combines a 300 kW rooftop solar installation with a 125 kW / 220 kWh BESS, designed to offset approximately 60% of the college’s electricity consumption. In addition to lowering operating costs—estimated at $30,000 in annual utility savings—the system includes backup power functionality to support the Student Services building during outages.

ELM MicroGrid supplied the modular BESS and FieldSight control platform, enabling seamless integration of solar generation with intelligent energy storage. The system monitors usage in real-time, prioritizes cost-efficient energy dispatch, and provides resiliency for critical infrastructure—all while reducing demand on the grid.

Beyond utility savings and emissions reductions, the project doubles as a hands-on educational resource. Students in the college’s renewable energy and electrical apprentice programs are using the installation as a living lab to gain real-world experience with clean energy systems, energy management, and sustainability practices.

Key results include offsetting 60% of electricity usage, saving an estimated $30,000 annually, supporting critical building operations during outages, providing hands-on learning opportunities for students, and helping the college reduce its carbon footprint.
